TRE™ — Tension & Trauma Releasing Exercises

TRE™ (Tension & Trauma Releasing Exercises) is a body-based practice developed by Dr. David Berceli to help individuals access and work with the body’s natural shaking mechanism. The practice uses a series of physical exercises designed to gently fatigue and stretch specific muscle groups before inviting a natural, involuntary shaking response.

Shaking is a natural physiological response found across the animal kingdom following periods of intense stress or threat. TRE™ provides a structured and intentional environment in which participants can explore this response while remaining conscious, present, and in control.

Rather than requiring participants to verbally revisit or retell difficult experiences, TRE™ works through the body. The practice invites greater awareness of physical sensations, muscular tension, breath, and the nervous system’s responses to stress.

The goal is not to force the body to shake or to “release trauma.” Instead, participants learn to observe, regulate, and work with their body's responses while developing a greater sense of awareness and agency.

TRE™ may be explored as a complementary practice for individuals experiencing chronic stress, physical tension, or the effects of prolonged stress and trauma. It can be particularly valuable for those who are interested in a body-based approach that does not require talking through their experiences.

TRE™ sessions are guided with an emphasis on choice, pacing, nervous-system awareness, and self-regulation. Participants are encouraged to remain within their window of tolerance and can pause or stop the practice at any time.

TRE™ is a complementary wellness practice and is not a substitute for psychotherapy, medical care, or other clinical treatment. Individuals with significant trauma histories or mental health conditions are encouraged to work with an appropriately qualified healthcare professional alongside any somatic practice.
